Find Care & Housing
First, if she was so embarrassed about her accident that she hid her pants in the trash, albeit the wrong one. Personally, I feel that by calling her out about her pants were not too tight embarrassed her even more. I don’t know you can correct her feelings of embarrassment, but somehow it needs to be accomplished. Your MIL sounds just stubborn enough to stop eating so she will no longer have bowel movements. I had a very dear friend, in fact my best friend of more than 43 years, who after being told by an ER Doctor on New Years Eve than it was not safe for her to drive and she could no longer live alone. She decided that her life was over and she was gone in 17 days. So please find a way to make her feel confident that her pants were too tight and that’s why she threw them away. Good Luck

Obviously, your mother-in-law seems to be facing a medical or pschiatric problem. Instead of "forcing" her to eat, have her see her doctor for a medical evaluation. If there is nothing medically wrong, then she could be mentally depressed and will need to take antidepressants. Old patients frequently turn depressed after a major medical event. What I wanted to convey to you is that your MIL is facing something more serious than a simple lack of appetite.
