Sunny, I've sorry to hear that your dad cannot walk after 100 days of therapy which is all that medicare will pay for. My mother at 78 had a stroke, went to rehab and regained the ability to walk with a walker, but after a month, fell and broke her hip. She went to rehab in a nursing home and never regained the ability to walk. She thought she could walk and had been walking and thus should be able to have gone home, but she was not able to walk and had not been walking. She stayed there four years before dying of a stroke.

How advanced is his dementia. It sounds rather far gone to me, but what does the doctor say. Is the doctor suggesting nursing home placement. Can her afford that or does he need to find a place that will take medicaid and as his POA help get him on medicaid?

Guardianship is expensive $5,000 and requires two doctors to say the person is incompetent, plus it involves going to court. I never had to get guardianship. My durable and medical POA was enough. Are you his only child or do you have any siblings?

I wish you well in this journey. Please come back and let us know how things work out, vent as much as you need to and ask more questions as they come up.

What does his physician say about his dementia, mental capacity and his prognosis for walking again? If his doctor says he lacks mental capacity then the POA should kick in; I'm not sure how its written. Contact your local Area Agency on Aging of Bureau of Senior Services as they can give you info on these topics.

It does sound dangerous and disruptive as well as too much for you as one person to take him home if and it sounds like a very big if, he ever walks again.I'm sorry that your siblings do not want to help you, but that is so often the story on this site.
