Have asked regarding my folks before. Elderly, far away from the children, and alcoholics. Spoke with them this afternoon. Mom seemed good and was lucid. Dad, not so much. Difficulty holding a conversation with him. Mom informs me that they're going to go and check out yet another assisted living facility "soon". States that the house is in a shambles, she can't care for him, herself and the house, too. I'm afraid for them. I think her statements about going to check out facilities is a ruse.

It seems you already know that you need to take action. Your own doubts and concerns are enough to warrant getting your parents some assistance and hopefully help. Consider how you’d feel if you didn’t intervene and something awful happened, this way you’ll have the peace of mind of knowing you tried to help. Best of luck, it’s never easy

If you cannot physically get down there to check out the situation for yourself, I guess a call to APS would start something happening. Best if you can be boots on the ground.
Pretty sure that an alcoholic isn't looking for assisted living where the alcohol will likely be hard, if not impossible to obtain.

Yes. Call Area on Aging and have them check out your folks and see what services might be available for them. Do it tomorrow. Don’t put it off. Get started and you all three will be better off. My good friend did this for sister in Ca and it really helped. She ended up going to her sisters house to help her get it in order but they helped her sister get started with dr appointments and therapy. When she traveled from NM to Ca they were able to have prearranged visits to ALFs and realtors. You can do a lot from a distance but sooner or later you need boots on the ground.
Just took a look for errors and saw Midkid used the same term. Boots on the Ground. I guess we are both agreeing you need to take action.
