Hi all. My mom is experiencing severe pain in her left hip when she has a bowel movement. We took her to the ER on Sunday but at the time we hadn't really connected the two things. At first she thought it was gas pains. So they did an xray, no significant findings. She wasn't in severe pain when we went and she was moving around ok. Today after the bm her pain was off the charts. Then it subsides. So it's definitely connected.

There is no incontinence.

We have an ortho appointment scheduled on 8/8 but I'm wondering if it's a gastro issue?? Hoping to get an MRI.

Does anyone thing a toilet cushion would provide some relief in the meantime?

Any one else have experiences with the this same issue??

Severe hip pain during bowel movements can be a sign of several conditions, including piriformis syndrome, pelvic floor dysfunction, or even issues related to the sacroiliac (SI) joint. It's important to pay attention to the location and nature of the pain, as well as any other symptoms, to help determine the potential cause and seek appropriate medical advice.

Possible Causes:
Piriformis Syndrome:
This condition involves irritation of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle in the buttock. Pain can be exacerbated by bowel movements, especially when straining, and may radiate down the leg.
Pelvic Floor Dysfunction:
The pelvic floor muscles support the organs of the pelvis and play a role in bowel movements. Dysfunction can lead to pain, including hip pain, and may also affect urination and sexual function.
SI Joint Dysfunction:
Problems with the sacroiliac joints (which connect the spine to the pelvis) can affect surrounding nerves and structures, potentially leading to bowel problems and pain in the hip and lower back.
Constipation:
Straining to pass hard stools can put pressure on the pelvic floor and surrounding muscles, causing pain in the hip and other areas.
Other Potential Causes:
Kidney stones, appendicitis, or even issues related to inflammatory bowel disease can sometimes manifest as hip pain during bowel movements.
Symptoms to Consider:
Pain Location: Is the pain primarily in the hip, or does it radiate down the leg?
Pain Type: Is it a dull ache, sharp pain, or a burning sensation?
Pain Timing: Does the pain worsen with sitting, standing, or during bowel movements?
Other Symptoms: Are you experiencing constipation, diarrhea, difficulty urinating, or other bowel or bladder issues?
When to Seek Medical Advice:
If the pain is severe, disrupts your daily life, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms like fever, nausea, or loss of bowel or bladder control, it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional promptly.
A doctor can properly diagnose the cause of your pain and recommend appropriate treatment options.
Treatment Options:
Treatment will depend on the underlying cause of the pain. It may include:
Physical Therapy:
To strengthen pelvic floor muscles, improve flexibility, and address muscle imbalances.
Medications:
Pain relievers, muscle relaxants, or other medications may be prescribed to manage pain and inflammation.
Stretching and Exercise:
Specific exercises can help relieve tension in the piriformis muscle or strengthen pelvic floor muscles.
Injections:
In some cases, corticosteroid injections may be used to reduce inflammation and pain.
Surgery:
In rare cases, surgery may be necessary to address structural problems or complications.

There are too many medical reasons for this pain to occur.
Alleviating the pressure of moving the bowels sounds better than a seat cushion.
Suggestion: While waiting for upcoming appointment, call PCP and ask if mom might benefit from a stool softener in the meantime.
