Tricky situation. If he is competent, it's his choice. Or it could be a sign of incompetence if he is broke. See an attorney about Guardianship. If he refuses to speak to the court evaluator, the judge will assume he is incompetent and appoint a conservator.

Susielu, My dad was set on winning money to leave for us when he died. To this end, over the last 3 years, he spent thousands. I do have to say though, he had it to spend, and it was his money. None of the three of his loved ones regret the fun he had spending it too. So, maybe, if it's not beyond his means, you might be best served by accepting it... if it is beyond his means, then that's a different story. You might see if you can get him to cut back, or find another outlet, although I was never able to do anything of the sort. Maybe a Psychiatrist could help if you could get him to see one? I could never do that either. Seniors are tough ole birds and pretty set in their ways...at least mine was.
