Mom has been in assisted living for 2 months. She has stopped packing her things but she still talks about going home often. She really likes the people at the AL center and it is obvious that she is making friends and forming relationships. She has vascular dementia, so many times she believes that she has known some of the people there for a very long time. When friends and family call, I hear her tell that she will be home soon, but she doesn't beg to go home. She talks about going home as if in the future but has stopped demanding to go home immediately. Is she really adjusting or is this just wishful thinking on my part?

You know that it's a blessing when she likes a place ,but yet we do feel like she is going to another stage in this so sad life of ours,To me it's a sad thing to watch my wife to go through,I am so bless to be here to take care of her and love her, because the alternatives are so much worse.

Mom was initially happy in AL but after a couple of months, she was trying to get out. After a 10 day hospital stay and some meds adjustment she was transferred to a NH where she is very content (she's been there for 8 months). I think that she just had a suddenly fast progression of her ALZ, and this is her new "normal." She seems to have accepted her life where she is and I feel (hope) that she may be quite peaceful from here on. The staff at the new place is amazing. I see no reason why your mom wouldn't adjust to her new life, especially if she feels safe and loved where she is. My mom doesn't need to make tough decisions anymore and I think that has helped her to relax.

I would enjoy this change with your mother. Dementia is such a difficult disease and she may have some bad days to come, but in the mean time encourage her friendships, activities. My mom has become more pleasant to around also, I think as they progress, they change but will still have a bad day from time to time. Hugs to you!!

WOW...sounds like your Mom is doing very well. I would imagine we would all talk about going home. It is where our heart is!

She likes the people and forming relationships, what a blessing for both of you. Relax and know you have done the right thing. I believe the not packing is a really positive sign.

I am happy for you! Congratulations and continued best wishes!
