It's a highly individualized decision based on a multitude of factors that vary from family to family. Are you talking about moving the person from living alone to a facility or moving her from living with someone in the family to a facility? I think it's nearly always dangerous for someone who has lost short-term memory to live alone.
Dad and I are hoping to keep Mom at home her whole life, but if the day comes when she has to be lifted a lot or Dad or mine's health fails, well, we may need to go with Plan B. I believe in avoiding a facility, but we have to be realistic about whether caregiving is harming Dad or me. Only you can know if you're at that point. And then also, you may have complicating factors of other family members needing you, of your history with your mom being very dysfunctional. There's just a ton of variables. Peace to you as you make your decision.
