Find Care & Housing
Please make sure your new toilet has a strong flush. We lived in an independent living and our toilet constantly plugged up and I would have to call for help, even in the middle of the night. I fed my husband prunes and the doctor put him on medicine. When we decided to move back to our house there were no more problems! Our toilet is named Toto. :)

Yes raised and elongated and plenty of room on each side with room for grab bars. Don't forget to raise the toilet paper holder too. Too many times I use a public handicapped toilet and can't reach down to get the toilet paper.
Another helpful thing is a stool that can be pulled up to rest the feet on for a long visit. Oh and don't forget the magazine rack! Also non slip floor in front of the toilet, you don't want granny on her butt.

Also, Kohlers are very pretty and pricey, but they have a million flappers that down the road are not standard pieces that every plumber carries on the truck, not good. Home Depot /Glacier bay brand in our experience do not last long. Try to get an American made ! Bet that was way more information than anyone every wanted!

I think the elongated are easier for the elderly, but do get the ADA (raised ) toilet they are about 2 inches taller and make it much easier. First consideration however is how much room you have to fit the elongated one. Also check code in your area (your plumber should know this) , here the toilet flange for handicapped toilet needs to be 18 inches from the side wall. In other words a 36 inch clearance for wheelchair access . When we redid this house we handicapped both bathrooms with an eye to the future. I have knee problems and the raised toilet is wonderful. BTW my hubs is a plumber :) and since I retired I have become his helper , lol we do this a lot . ;)

Most nursing homes seem to use the elongated ones. I think there's more support for the person sitting on it.

I like the elongated myself. Gives a person more room to stick their hand down there and do what they need to do. :)
