Rehab has been unable to find AL for Dad. His PT is done but he has no safety awareness. His early dementia is getting worse while he is there. They said they will keep him until they find a place however he has no way to pay (phone scammers took all). I have a call into the VA for help but this is Thanksgiving weekend. Wondering if the VA would help cover the cost of AL or would he have to go on Medicaid? Anyone go through this?

Your other option would be to call your local VA office and see if Dad qualifies for a VA home.

VA is very slow with help. The application can take while and that is when you have all the info. Not sure why Rehab trying to get Dad in an AL if he has no money. ALs are private pay. Aid and Attendance will not cover the whole cost which is at least 5k a month. Medicaid pays for LTC, a nursing home. I would apply for Medicaid because its needed now. If he gets Medicaid, VA will not be able to pay towards care. Both government.

The VA will not cover the cover of assisted living, they will cover some of the cost. They pay I believe up to almost $1800 a month towards it. Depending on what state you are in, Medicaid may not even pay for assisted living. Some will pay for the caregiving cost but not room and board.
