Your best bet is for your doctor to recommend a Nutritionist to speak with who will give you advice on what is best for your individual case.

Agreed, see the nutritionist. Portion control is just as important as item selection and variety.

Yes, a nutritionist will be valuable. Your insurance or Medicare will pay for a free consultation concerning your diet. In the old days, people were offered a course in nutrition when they first learned they were diabetic. I don't know if that is still the case. If it is, be sure to register for the course. You'll learn about the sugars contained in certain food, how much to eat of each, and glycemic indices. You'll learn that meat and eggs have virtually no sugar, but that you also need to look out for your cholesterol and triglycerides. A complicating factor of diabetes can be vessel damage when sugars and fats are too high (or low) in the blood. This can cause the damage of the eyes, kidneys, brain, and other organs that you've probably heard about.

So... sign up for that course in nutrition for the newly diagnosed diabetic. And good luck! It takes some getting used to, but it isn't too bad. I am not diabetic, but I went through it with my mother many years ago. I learned a lot along with her.
