Recommendations on medical transport?

People realize this man is being brought from NC to NJ. I doubt if the Rehab will set this up. This is not like he is going from Rehab to a nearby LTC unit. He is crossing 4 States before he gets to NJ. Something like a a 9 hr drive on I-95. And if any of you have traveled I-95 that 9 hrs could be longer.

When we needed to transport my MIL from central Fla to Atlanta, it was a good size transport and the cost in 2013 was $2000 which we thought was reasonable at the time.

As said you first need to find a place that will take him. If on Medicaid, he may not be able to get Medicaid in NJ. It takes a while to apply and get the paperwork needed. Statements from 5 yrs back. Make sure u know what ur taking on.

Have you talked to the Nursing home you want him transferred to?
Do they have a bed available?
What medical tests do they require before they accept him? (Some want a TB test, some require a double test. (this can be a blood test rather than a skin test)
Now you can get transportation set up.
If he needs medical transport either facility can arrange that or you can do it yourself.
If he does not need medical transport sometimes driving yourself with the help of a second person (acting as a caregiver or relief driver) is the least expensive. Even if you have to rent a van or small RV.

Is your FIL in AL , MC or LTC? If LTC then you will probably need an ambulance transport, which may be thousands of dollars. Medical transport companies will give you an estimate. I don't know if you'd start looking in SC or NJ...

Mark, please see my answer above as to whether this is a good idea. Discuss with his MD and the nurse managers and social workers before attempting anything like this. They are also your best guides for attempting to do this move.
