Hi, my name is John. My mother (62yrs old) has been paralyzed from the waist down for 18 years. Recently, she was unresponsive and ended up in the emergency room. After her release, she became delirious, talking to herself, and has not been sleeping for 4 days. We brought her to the emergency room and got her tested. Her results came back normal except for kidney stones. We're currently waiting for her next appointment to get them removed. The appointment is in 2 weeks, and I am worried that if she continues not sleeping, her health will deteriorate.

Like Beatty I am worried there is some infection going on due to these stones. I am surprised this is something they feel can wait for 2 weeks. Your Mom has no ability to even feel the increase in pain that could indicate blockage and so on.

Do you have Azo Strips or any other strips in the home that are able to indicate increase in nitrite or leukocytes in the urine? I recommend you test and if they increase it is back to the ER or a test goes in for C&S and antibiotics.
I think you need to be in touch with MD if hospital psychosis is remaining with her once she is home a few days.
This sounds very worrisome to me. I wouldn't let this go 2 weeks.

I would follow up with her primary Dr regarding not sleeping & mention the kidney stones too.

Has UTI definately been ruled out? These can progress & be serious.

I don't know if lack of sleep directly causes delerium - but I have seen many incidents where a person sleeps all day & night & their delerium starts to lift.

Delerium is often seen after surgery but very commonly with infections - especially urinary tract.

Call your Mom’s doctor . He/she may prescribe medicine. When my sister had delirium in the hospital they gave her Seroquel . Or the doctor may say to take her back to the ER.
