Skipper, room additions are a personal choice, thus the taxpayers won't help you fund the addition. See if you can refinance your house to take out some equity to use to add an addition. Don't forget that addition will add value to your home, but it will also raise your property taxes. Don't forget to check with the town/city/county governments to see if zoning will allow an addition.

Also check with your local council on aging to see, if by rare chance, there might be a program to help with some of the cost of an addition.
