cwillie has an excellent point about downsizing and moving to a senior friendly home.

My parents still lived in a house with many sets of stairs. My gosh, my Mom would take the laundry from the dryer [main floor] and carry it downstairs to the basement to hang on the clothes line to finish drying. You can imagine the sleepless nights I had thinking about her falling at 97 years old. Plus Dad's workshop was down there, too.

After my Mom passed from a fall [not stair related] Dad told me he and Mom had many a fall on the stairs going upstairs. Good grief. I got Dad caregivers 24/7 to help him around the house and get up and down those stairs.

Eventually Dad decided the house was too dangerous for him with all those stairs as the caregivers were having difficultly getting him up and down, so he choose a really nice independent living facility.

One option is to modify the main floor washroom and convert a room to a bedroom rather than to install stair lifts, of course there are still often stairs outside that can cause difficulties. It may be time to plan for the long term and consider downsizing to a more accessible, senior friendly home.

There are "chair lifts" which would need to be installed by a professional business that sells the chair lifts. The person rides up or down on an attached chair... the only issue would be is would the person use the lift or be afraid of it.
