Nothing for it, I'm afraid: rubber boots, rubber gloves, disposable apron, bucket, paper towels and plastic rubbish bags in quantity, disinfectant - and get busy.

Once you've done that, and got over the shock, call your local social services, department for ageing or equivalent and get them in to do an assessment - preferably with your friend's agreement, but without if need be.

It sounds like your friend needs to see a Dr.

If he has diarrhea, he needs medicine so that he doesn't become dehydrated. Be sure he is drinking enough fluids to make up for the loss. Gatoraid is good or something like Pedialyte. If he isn't wearing disposable underwear, then perhaps he needs to be. If he isn't making it to the toilet, perhaps there could be a portable potty chair placed by his bedside or his chair or wherever he spends most of his time.

It sounds as though he needs more assistance than he is getting currently. Hire an aide.
