My mother has nighttime urinary incontinence. We use Depends maximum absorbency, but they no longer totally contain the fluid/odor overnight. (Nightgowns aren't really damp, but there is odor.) I'm thinking of trying Attends booster pads, but we have a large supply of unused Poise pads so thought those might serve the purpose instead.

Thanks everyone for the information flowing from my question! My mother has been using Depends maximum absorbancy with Attends booster pads day and night for several weeks now. This is working well for us. We make a trip to the bathroom early (6 a.m.) and change the pants/pad, which are quite full at that point but not leaking. Then another trip around 10 a.m., again with a change, and regular trips (about every 4 hours) during the day; the pad usually stays dry all day til bedtime, but if there is some dampness usually we can just change the booster pad without changing the Depends pants. I dispose of the used pants/pads in an odor-control trash bag inside a lidded plastic storage bin, which sits in our "extra" bathtub, behind a shower curtain; it's handy and out of sight, and there's no odor problem. (My mom is 94, lives with me, has cognitive issues ("executive function" problems), and requires my help with most activities. Don't know whether this detail from me is useful, but maybe so for someone in similar circumstances.)

Hello MidKid....my husband has a supra pubic catheter and leaks are very common ...if you can order drain sponges which is similar to a 4X4 gauze with a split to put over the tube coming out of her belly; use paper tape; this pad will absorb leakage...my husband has a problem with clogging of sand gravel and then the flow stops; then we have to rush to the doctor to change the catheter...it is a non-stop problem and the Urologist said there is nothing more he can do...do you have a Bard night bag? He wears a leg bag during the day but changes to a night bag; also you need special waterproof pads so the mattress does not get ruined.

In my experience, Poise pads were not very effective, Mother has constant UTI;s and those were part of the problem. Also, she wasn't changing often enough AND she won't drink enough. Just a cycle of antibiotics all the time. She has a supra pubic catheter now, but still "leaks" a lot. I think the other posters had good ideas about pads that wick away the urine from the body. Mother never would spring for the extra cost.

Mom needs to drink lots of water...if she is not a water drinker then cut the cranberry juice 1/2 with water and ice cubes...there is a product in Walgreen's if you have that store called Azo...for bladder issues; but keep in mind that if she has burning and uses one of their product for infection it turns the urine bright orange and it stains so you have to be careful...you can give her cranberry capsules and do not give her acidic fruit like grapefruit; that is what the doctor told us. I would have mom shower with fragrance free soap too and if she cannot get into the shower at least have her wash her private area to keep the odor of urine away...the less she drinks the stronger her urine will smell...I know this first hand from caring for my husband...hope Mom gets better soon ..you are doing the best you can for her.

My Mom is 89 and incontinent also. Sometimes gets to the bathroom in time.....mostly not. I have her using Depends and we put the Poise super duper absorbancy in the Depends also. Works great. Use grocery bags to line her garbage can for ease of disposal.

Now, she does have a constant problem with UTI's. CONSTANT. I do feel that the Poise and Depends contributes to the start of the UTI. But, there is no choice. I make sure she changes very, very frequently and showers at least every other day.

My mother used 2 types of Poise pads-moderate for day and thick for night. Store brands save $. I am 68 and use liners...better safe than embarrassed!

Sometimes there's nothing else to do for it, except to get up once or more in the night, to change her pads. Otherwise, old urine too close to skin too long, results in sores.
Good barrier creams are important, too.
It's lousy for getting a good night's sleep, but, treating skin breakdowns is worse.

Thank you so much, everyone, for your helpful responses. Such a wealth of experience, dedication, and good sense. What's working for us right now is Depends with the Attends booster pad, and I've also ordered a booster pad sample pack from HDIS.

I have been using Reassure maximum booster pads from HDIS for my mom overnight and they work well most of the time, and they work with almost any diaper. They do not have a waterproof shield so they do not hold the urine in against her skin. They absorb and whisk it away allowing it to flow to the outer diaper. They also have a peel and stick strip so they don't move around in the outer diaper. Early on I tried using the poise pads but they would fill up and leak over the sides missing most of the outer diaper. My mom is small and even the smallest underwear/diaper is too big, so plenty of room for a booster pad. HDIS will send you loads of samples if you ask. Here is the link to the booster pads page: /hdis.com/

Mother did this (layering) and she was constantly fighting URI's. Really watch for those, The tight fitting undergarment PLUS another shield can hold the urine close to the body and create a natural pathway for UTI's. House smelled horrible, mostly due to the medicines she took--she now had a supra-pubic catheter, which she doesn't love, but fewer UTI's. And do get those pads out of the house ASAP. The smell is hard to get rid of once it's established.

I too, purchased Tena brand overnight briefs for my mother. She did use an additional pad and it made her feel a little more secure. I also suggest using a barrier cream to keep skin from redness and chafing. Good luck

Believe it or not, they can pee out a quart (32 oz) overnight unless you 1. Limit fluid intake after dinner and 2. Avoid diuretics at bedtime, such as furosemide. We moved mom's diuretic pills to breakfast and lunch so the effect is gone by bedtime.

I order supplies from Cheap Chux. They have many brands and will even send you samples so you can try some products out. Regular stores don't carry these type of products and I am sure they can help you. My Mom has a Foley catheter now.

I stock up on Poise & Depends when I visit Mom every 1-2 months. The drug stores frequently have sales on these, combined with coupons. If you have a CVS loyalty card, you'll get a coupon about once a month for 25% off everything not on sale, or $5 off a purchase of $25. Purchases of these items count towards bonuses of $5 every so often. This is easier for me to shop than fighting the lines at Walmart.

My Mom has been using a combination of Depend and Poise pads at night for about two years. She has CNAs at her home during the day (she wears a Poise pad inside a cotton panty that fits snugly), but at night (10 pm to 9 am) she's on her own. She can still get up to get to the bathroom before wetting herself most times. She puts TWO pads in the Depend pant, then if she wets it, she can just peel off the top pad, put it in the waste basket, and not have to insert a new one before returning to bed, since the bottom one is still in the pant. By the way, we save the plastic bags from grocery stores to line the waste baskets in her bathroom and bedroom for disposal of soiled pads. That way, all you have to do is tie the handles and put in a clean bag without touching the pads. I found the easiest way to secure the pad to the Depend is to turn it inside out, line up the pad and press to adhere, put second one on top, then put the whole assembly on Mom (easier than putting Depend on first, then trying to aline pad.

I have used Poise for several years with my mother's nighttime incontenence and it works very well. I would suggest making sure someone can change her at least once a night so her skin doesn't break down. I would also suggest finding out when your mom most likely is urinating the most during the nighttime. Once I charted this for my mother I found that between 4:30-8:00am she became the fountain. I have the aides changing her 2X between these times. Since we started doing this her skin has rebounded and no longer has breakdown issues. As far as urine smell, I created a natural spray with baking soda and dawn detergent. Not only is the smell eliminated the mattress stains were gone. Hope this helps!

I care for my invalid incontinent mother-in-law with Alzheimers, and after trial and error, I have found this combination to be the most effective; Tena Ultrastretch brief (buy on Amazon) along with a pull-up brief that I have ripped the sides out of as a liner. The Tena diaper has a wide elasticized band with velcro on either side, and unless she is extra wet or messy, I can change out the opened pull-up and reuse the Tena diaper. Since I buy the cheapest pull up that I can find, it's a considerable cost savings. Even though my M-I-L weighs approx. 120 lbs, I buy the XL Tenas so that I have a lot of coverage area. On Amazon, you can buy a 2 box pack (72 ct total) for approx. $55, and have a good month+ supply.

Hello Lynn...my husband had such a terrible time with incontinence I took him to the Urologist and the doctor felt it was best for him to use a catheter..it is not a cure all because catheters do leak..if you want to save your mattress use the chux sheets under the sheet and on top as well as purchasing a waterproof mattress pad...hope this info helps.

The absolute best overnight diapers are Tranquility Premium Overnight. Best price is from Amazon. They last all night. These are the only ones that work.

My mom has used Poise pads inside of her Depends for several years, both day and night. Not only does this seem to better contain the urine, but it is easier to just change the pad two or three times during the day than to completely undress from the waist down to replace the Depends. There are still occasional overnight leaks, but not as many.
