My mother has nighttime urinary incontinence. We use Depends maximum absorbency, but they no longer totally contain the fluid/odor overnight. (Nightgowns aren't really damp, but there is odor.) I'm thinking of trying Attends booster pads, but we have a large supply of unused Poise pads so thought those might serve the purpose instead.

My mom has used Poise pads inside of her Depends for several years, both day and night. Not only does this seem to better contain the urine, but it is easier to just change the pad two or three times during the day than to completely undress from the waist down to replace the Depends. There are still occasional overnight leaks, but not as many.

I have used Poise for several years with my mother's nighttime incontenence and it works very well. I would suggest making sure someone can change her at least once a night so her skin doesn't break down. I would also suggest finding out when your mom most likely is urinating the most during the nighttime. Once I charted this for my mother I found that between 4:30-8:00am she became the fountain. I have the aides changing her 2X between these times. Since we started doing this her skin has rebounded and no longer has breakdown issues. As far as urine smell, I created a natural spray with baking soda and dawn detergent. Not only is the smell eliminated the mattress stains were gone. Hope this helps!

Believe it or not, they can pee out a quart (32 oz) overnight unless you 1. Limit fluid intake after dinner and 2. Avoid diuretics at bedtime, such as furosemide. We moved mom's diuretic pills to breakfast and lunch so the effect is gone by bedtime.

The absolute best overnight diapers are Tranquility Premium Overnight. Best price is from Amazon. They last all night. These are the only ones that work.

I stock up on Poise & Depends when I visit Mom every 1-2 months. The drug stores frequently have sales on these, combined with coupons. If you have a CVS loyalty card, you'll get a coupon about once a month for 25% off everything not on sale, or $5 off a purchase of $25. Purchases of these items count towards bonuses of $5 every so often. This is easier for me to shop than fighting the lines at Walmart.

I too, purchased Tena brand overnight briefs for my mother. She did use an additional pad and it made her feel a little more secure. I also suggest using a barrier cream to keep skin from redness and chafing. Good luck

Mother did this (layering) and she was constantly fighting URI's. Really watch for those, The tight fitting undergarment PLUS another shield can hold the urine close to the body and create a natural pathway for UTI's. House smelled horrible, mostly due to the medicines she took--she now had a supra-pubic catheter, which she doesn't love, but fewer UTI's. And do get those pads out of the house ASAP. The smell is hard to get rid of once it's established.

I have been using Reassure maximum booster pads from HDIS for my mom overnight and they work well most of the time, and they work with almost any diaper. They do not have a waterproof shield so they do not hold the urine in against her skin. They absorb and whisk it away allowing it to flow to the outer diaper. They also have a peel and stick strip so they don't move around in the outer diaper. Early on I tried using the poise pads but they would fill up and leak over the sides missing most of the outer diaper. My mom is small and even the smallest underwear/diaper is too big, so plenty of room for a booster pad. HDIS will send you loads of samples if you ask. Here is the link to the booster pads page: /hdis.com/

Thank you so much, everyone, for your helpful responses. Such a wealth of experience, dedication, and good sense. What's working for us right now is Depends with the Attends booster pad, and I've also ordered a booster pad sample pack from HDIS.

Sometimes there's nothing else to do for it, except to get up once or more in the night, to change her pads. Otherwise, old urine too close to skin too long, results in sores.
Good barrier creams are important, too.
It's lousy for getting a good night's sleep, but, treating skin breakdowns is worse.
