What is a person on Medicaid legally allowed to spend their savings on? Would that person be allowed to spend it on travel expenses for a loved one to visit them, assuming they can't travel to see the loved one?

Not so fast with that gifting concept. Is the person with Medicaid in a long term care facility? Are they likely to need that? Or are is theperson with Medicaid just living in the community and have some type of MedicAid as their general health insurance? You can spend your own money on whatever you want to, it's not illegal to pay for someone to visit you. On this site we often assume the worst case financial situation and the perils of having a problem with funding long term care in a nursing home if you spent some money during that look back period. There is a diffrence between every day Medicaid and the more restrictive eligibility issues in long term care Medicaid. It's not all the same. So, depending on what the overall case is, it may be just fine to help someone visit a person who has Medicaid insurance.

No. Spending for someone else's travel is gifting. There are many articles and threads that discuss acceptable ways of spending. A prepaid funeral plan below your state's medicaid threshold is acceptable. Usually under $1500. Dental work. A nicer wheelchair or walker. A better mattress than Medicaid or Medicare pay for. Eyeglasses, especially spares for lost ones.
