M-I-L with dementia has been in a nursing home since May of this year. She was able to private pay for May and June. We filed her application for Medicaid in early June. We are waiting for them to pick her up. The nursing home is fine with this and realize they will get paid once the application is approved. I have 2 questions.

1) Is she responsible for paying MD bills we are receiving for services after the Medicaid application was filed? Or will these expenses be picked up by Medicaid once approved?

2) It seems to be taking Medicaid a long time to process her application. I've called twice and each time have been told "we are backlogged." We live in New York state.

Thank you in advance for any input.

Yes I sure will -"politely" being the key word - LOL!

I'm sure you are correct that in NY it probably take 6 months. The waiting is just anxiety provoking.

Please also remember the share of cost your mother will need to pay to nursing home. Your parent’s care will not be paid 100% by Medicaid, she will only have a small personal needs allowance per month. Is her social security income going directly to nursing home?

Yes once approved her SS (- $60 each month) will go directly to the nursing home.

You should have filed back in April so Medicaid would take over in July. You are given 90 days to prove you have spent down her money and met all their criteria and have her placed in an LTC. Criteria includes a doctor's eval, 5 yrs of statements, proof all assets were spent down, ect. At this point, you may have to reapply if you didn't give all the criteria within the 90 days. I had to call Moms caseworker to confirm I did what was needed and reminded them Mom needed Medicaid as of July first.

Thank you. This is what I wondered. I am going to start holding her bills and let the pharmacy, and MDs know she is pending Medicaid.

When I helped my MIL apply for Medicaid here in MN in 2016 it took about 3 months. In NY I would not be surprised if it took much longer but do keep "politely" seeking status.

Regarding paying your mom's medical bills, Medicaid should cover those if your mom qualifies. FYI you will need to help her reapply every year at the same time next year that you applied this year.
