Mom is in a residential care unit of a nursing home. She will be self pay as it stands now for about 6-8 months. Family wants her to put half of her money in family members name to be used later. I feel that it may cost mom more in the end. Does anyone know what the penelties are in Maine.

I don't know about policies in Maine, but since Mom is going to need Medicaid in less than a year, I think it is foolish to try to give money to family members at this point. Her money is to be used for her care, before tax money kicks in. If there are items your mother needs, such as a delux wheelchair or a better bed or some new clothes, using money for her care is reasonable now. Giving it away is not, and the Medcaid application specifically asks if any money or other assets have been given away in the last 5 years. Definitely not worth the hassle.

Will she be able to stay in the same facility once she is on Medicaid?
