Can we pay the difference between a private and non-private room for our Mother after she goes on Medicaid?

Maybe someone who knows a lot about this will chime in. I don't, but I have read a lot about Medicaid and their rules. There are so many little things that seem to trip you up. My question would be whether Medicaid would consider that extra money you are paying to the facility on her behalf INCOME to your mom and thus disqualify her on the income requirement. But, I don't know that for sure. I would find out in advance, before I committed though.

Varies by state regulations. Iowa allows it. It also depends on the policy of the Nursing Home itself. They may want one person to personally guarantee the supplemental payment which can be over $100 a DAY.

We're in Missouri and the the difference between the private and non-private is only a few hundred per month. Maybe $15 per day. But I could see medicaid not allowing it. I also need to check with her nursing home, I guess they would be able to tell me their policy.

Things could change in the next few years, but why don't you find out from the nursing home how it would work now?

Actually I've read somewhere that people usually do better with a roommate rather than in a private room. You might want to explore that idea.
