I have errands that I have to run several times a week and sometimes doctors appointments for myself. My Mom is able to take care of her own personal needs so i really just need a companion or babysitter to watch her while I am gone.

Since my 22 year old daughter is home 3 days a week until graduation I have asked her to babysit grandma for me and paid her $10 an hour. During the summer my niece will be here to help me out when I need to leave and I will be paying her but is it okay to pay like this or do I have to do the whole 1099 thing or take out taxes etc? I do pay her with a check so I can keep track of how much is being spent on care.

All they are doing is keeping an eye on her to make sure she is okay as she sits on the patio or works in her garden or naps.

That did make me laugh!! I think you will be ok since it is not full time, sort of like babysittting. If it got to be alot of money it may be different. But This is just my thought on this. Good luck!

I care for Mom 24/7 and I am paid nothing as her POA/Caregiver but I have a 22 year old daughter and and 18 year old niece that could help me by watching grandma while I run to do errands. If I hire someone from the outside, I have to pay them for a minimum of 4 hours and it is anywhere from 15 to 25 dollars an hour. Why do that if it is okay to pay the older girls who are not working and home from school to help me. I just don't know if it turns into a bag of worms with IRS or what if in 3 years Mom should need to go on Medi Cal and they do a look back, will I be in hot water???? I just thought maybe someone else has run into the same thing.

I don't know anything about 1099's or taxes or anything like that so maybe this is way off base but I see nothing wrong with paying your daughter to sit with her grandma and using grandma's money to pay for it. When I was 26 (many moons ago) my mom and aunt paid me weekly to sit with my grandma everyday. I got a check at the end of the week. I don't remember anyone saying anything about taxes or 1099's or anything like that. If your mom wanted to give a cash gift to your daughter she could do that, this would be like that.

But again, there are folks out there who know way more than I do about this stuff. I just related to your situation since I did the same thing for my grandma and was paid.
