sleeps all night and part of the day. Stage? I keep a calendar and tell him when to bathe..no problem with him doing so as long as I tell him when.

I can't speak to the stage, but I think the underlying issue of keeping him active is just a important.

You're really fortunate that he's cooperative when he's asked, so make that your focus rather than the apparently lack of motivation. Take advantage of the positives that are available.

It might just be that he no longer has the capability to plan for himself but is still responsive to suggestions of activity.
Create lists of things he enjoys doing, then let him select. But don't overwhelm him with too many choices - perhaps just one or two....this or that? It's easier for someone with dementia problems to deal with a few choices rather than a multitude of them.

You refer to him as the patient, so I assume you're a paid caregiver and not a relative. So just think of creatively challenging him to be active as part of the job in addition to your other responsibilities.

Good luck - you really do have a lot to work with since he's cooperative.

The Aging Care website has a lot of excellent articles on Alzheimer's/Dementia. Here is one I hope is helpful for you. Sorry it took us this long to answer, your question got buried under a lot of other questions that day.

If you ask him to mow the lawn and he does it, he's probaly not ill, just wants peace and quiet. Otherwise my husband could do small things like lift his hand, sit or stand on request, when he felt like it, until a few days before he died.
