Mom is currently in SNF for PT after a hospital discharge.... her Physical condition isn’t improving as much as we hoped and will be discharged home soon. She has Parkinson’s along with TN, diabetes, memory issues and a partial thyroid. She has a two person assist for transfers and on a good day walks about 5 ft with maximum assist. Dad is her primary caregiver and has severe back issues and won’t be able to give as much care as she will need. Could she qualify for Hospice care?

Have an assessment done for palliative care. Do you have palliative care in your area? It is the step before hospice.

My mom has Parkinson’s and I was looking into palliative care at one point. A nursing home is a better choice but my mom did not agree to go into a facility other than for rehab purposes. Do you have Compassus hospice and palliative care in your area? They are wonderful.

I am no longer her caregiver. I did more than my share for 15 years in my home. I burned out. She is now with my brother and sister in law.

I will ask about the palliative care. My parents are hoping to stay together as long as possible at home. You’re fortunate to have a brother to help ...I am their only child and am looking for as much help as we can get to make their lives as comfortable as possible.

She might qualify for hospice but it’s not 24-7 at home. Family is still expected to provide majority of care. This is point to discuss paying caregivers or care in facility. Too many people watch hospice on TV and think it’s 1:1 care in private room. It’s not as my mother in law on hospice in SNF on Medicaid will tell you. Not happy but safe and professional care. Her husband with his own health issues can be a spouse again. Caring for her at home almost killed him.

I don't believe so, she likely has more than 6 months to live. In other words a Dr. is unlikely to sign off under the Medicare requirement she is likely to die within 6 months. Mom likely needs a Nursing Home at this point. I'm sorry, I know what you are going through.

I’m wondering about that requirement. When speaking to the initial intake at our local hospice we were told that about 23% of their clients have been on hospice for over a year. Some folks also graduate off hospice and sometimes go back on depending on their diagnosis and limitations.
