Find Care & Housing
I was thinking the same, Larkspur. Low-income seniors often are partially or totally exempt from property tax. The problem is that often you have to apply the year before to be considered for exemption. Linda, if you have your parents' POA, check with your county's property tax division about what relief might be available for your parents. They may qualify for exemption based on age, income, or disability. Check to see what documentation you need to bring to apply for exemption -- usually letters from doctors if disability or income tax returns if low income.

Your parents may be eligible for a reduced tax rate. This might be of some help, Linda: The Maryland Homeowners' Property Tax Credit Program. http://www.dat.state.md.us/sdatweb/htc.html
