I ballroom dance and go away to competitions several times a year. Technically my mom could stay alone but she is afraid after dark. I would need someone to come before dark and they could leave after she gets up. I would also like to know the cost of this. Her income is social security.

There are caregivers, and there are caregivers. I know the good and the bad because I was employed as one for over five years, and I was one of the better ones, little ever dreaming that one day I would have to quit my job to stay home and care for my own husband who has dementia. I know that the screening process is not what it should be. I was screened, interviewed, and my background checked thoroughly. The interview lasted an hour and a half, but that particular woman who interviewed me is no longer with the company because she became disgusted with them. A lot of caregivers aren't screened properly, and they go into homes where they are needed and do a slovenly job of caring for the patient. Some of them don't care; they just want the money. Be very cautious. You would be better off hiring someone you know about from a friend or acquaintance. Many times, if you go through the company, you'll get someone who doesn't give a snap.

If this is truly occasional and truly just companionship, you may be able to find a young retiree interested in a little extra cash. Network, ask neighbors, just like you would when looking for a baby sitter. But beware of not underestimating you mom' s needs. Cool hobby, glad to see someone is balancing life and caregiving. Best of luck to you

I live in OH, some do not charge hourly for overnight, some do. Maybe ask someone who has a great caregiver how much they pay, or call a facility that employs caregivers nearby, or type in overnight caregiver rate in your state, duties, and fees. Just a couple ideas .M in OH
