My mother in-law has been taking care of her husband that has dementia. Up until this last week its been hard but manageable. He recently held her hostage in their home and attacked her. This resulted in her calling the police and them taking him to the hospital. The hospital says that they can only keep him for a few days. There is NO way he can go back to the house for fear that he'll hurt her. What are her options. She has no income except her SS and cannot afford to pay for a home to put him in. The VA says that they have a waiting list.
Needing some kind of place to start.
Thank you

Find Care & Housing
She should qualify for HEAP, SNAP and many other things through her county office of the aging. I hope the VA comes through for you or he will end up in the county psychiatric facility. She should have an Order of Protection to keep him away, make no contact and let the state be his Guardian.

The VA does take a long time sadly, but in the mean time he should be placed under further observation ... like pamstegman mentioned the county psychiatric facility may be something to look at. Everything should be written down and documented and reported to the Dr.s. Call the VA often to keep checking if they have room...don't wait for them to call you. You can also have professional care coming to the home to help and document. Keep your mother-in-law away from him, I know it will be hard on her and you all, but until something can be done its better to take precautions.
