Once at NH what happens to all those doctor appointments?

Curtain, I think it all depends on the variables. How mobile will your Mom be? Walker, wheelchair, bedridden? Does the nursing home offer transportation for those who are mobile? If not mobile, does the nursing home have a patient transport service? Would Mom go alone to the appointments or would an Aide be with her?

Maybe once in a nursing home some of the specialized services might not be needed. Guess it depends on your Mom's health and age.

Example my Mom now is in a skilled care center and is bedridden, and she is 97 so no need now for yearly dermatologist, nor seeing the gyn, nor having mammograms, yep was still having those done. No need for that oncologist or urologist. If Mom was still of clear mind and mobile, my gosh we would be at all those appointments.

Going to all those specialized doctor every year, it was like if I saw one more waiting room I would scream.... the interesting thing, it was a serious fall that caused Mom to now be bedridden, not any of the need to see all those doctors.

When my folks moved in with me, I got them into a local FP who is able to handle almost all their problems. The NH should have a Dr who "oversees" everything. I know the rehab did when mom ended up there. If she gets admitted. see what they offer. I agree with FF .. it may not all be needed at that po

Hi FF and Pam, my mother has such complex medical problems it's hard to imagine a general doctor overseeing them all. Right now she lives at home independently - barely. Uses a walker but arguably and needs a wheelchair for any significant distance or speed. This is hypothetical she's not about to go anywhere and I don't have a place picked out. I was just wondering generally what happens because this has to come up for most people entering an NH who have multiple conditions.

FF, what about the oncologist and urologist, why didn't she still need them?

Curtain, my Mom had been seeing an Oncologist and Urologist for decades and each doctor told me that Mom's minor conditions wouldn't ever be the death of her. In fact, both doctors told her she didn't need to keep coming back now that she was in her mid-90's, but she insisted and we went.

My mom in a NH is seen by the APRN a couple of times a week and and the geriatrics doc every moth or so. Mom had a suspicious mole arise a couple of weeks ago; the dermatologist who stops in once s month a so checked it out, we took mom to his office to hit removed. we've done away with the cardiologist folks.
