My mum is 66 with developed Alzheimer's. She has been sleeping for 14hrs per night or so getting up around noon when my dad wakes her.

If your question is about whether this sleeping pattern is normal, I'd say yes, people with dementia often sleep more and more as the dementia progresses. Do mention it to her doctor, though.

What is your mother like when she is awake? How alert is she?

Dementia is horrible at any age, but it seems particularly tragic when it strikes someone so young.
