My Mom is going to be discharged from rehab hospital and they are recommending SNF for next steps. The current place she is at has a SNF wing, but they want a deposit of $67,000, refundable, but in case Medicare or insurance won't cover. She has Medicare supplemental. Is this normal? I'm finding we're having a hard time finding a place, many have already said no they won't take her.

Medicare will pay days 21-100 at 50% if the patient is making progress. Supplemental may pick up the 50% copay which is about $177 per day.

How many days of rehab has mom used already? It sounds as though they think she may plateau and they want to make sure they get paid.

Is the plan to have her stay as a long term care resident after rehab? Will you be applying for Medicaid for her?

The plan would be for her to go home eventually, though not sure at this point if that will really happen or not. She's made a lot of progress, but I think she just needs more time and therapy.

It's very possible she may need long term care in a nursing home. No Medicaid at this point, but may be a reality down the road a couple years.

She is going for rehab, yes. I thought Medicare paid for up to 100 days SNF?

For rehab, yes it’s 100 days BUT they only cover 100% of the cost for the first 20 days. After that, they pay 50% so make sure your moms supplemental policy will cover the rest. I think you are looking at about $177 day out of pocket after 20 days if she doesn’t have a supplemental policy to cover it.

Medicare won’t pay for a skilled nursing facility unless she’s going for rehab. Do you perhaps mean Medicaid?
