Nursing home costs. What do other people pay?

Yes, My mom had been paying $11,000 a month for long term care after surgery from a fall. When I visited her, she was usually sitting in her wheelchair asleep in the main room, next to the nurses' desk with a group of other wheelchair bound ladies, who were either falling asleep as well or mumbling incoherently. One day music was playing and they were all much happier, dancing their hands to the beat. That was only one day. I was told she couldn't be put to bed because she'd fall out, so they had to "watch" her in the main room, which was not a pretty room, a hospital environment, cold and uninviting, with a TV show about remodeling homes on for them to watch. ??? I was told it is common for the residents to sleep all the time, part of the dementia. On the days I found her in her room in bed, her room mate had a tv show on about rape and murder. Horrible. It broke my heart every single day to see her there, but memory care wouldn't take her because of her needs. I still work. I have to, so I couldn't take her home, but that is exactly what I felt I should do every day. As MACinCT says, home care would cost $22,000. I didn't give up and finally found a home in my neighborhood that took her on Hospice and she pays almost half the price of the nursing home for one on one care now. She is happy and so well cared for. It is such a shame that this country cannot take better care of our elders. I suggest you continue your search for a place that is not corporate, a place where the caregivers are paid well and is more like a home.

$7400 a month for assisted living in Plano, TX. BTW the assisted living facility is great and won a JD Power award. I can't even imagine $15,000 a month. That's crazy. I am already afraid we will run out of money.
