I'm 24 yrs.old and am mentally competent. I have CP& live with my mom & step dad. I need help in deciding which direction to go. Between my mom and my brother borrowing money or just taking it out of my wallet I am at my wits end. Then my mom complains that I'm spending too much money. Who can help me protect my assets? Can I have advice please?

Buy a small combination safe.
Are you paying you mom for living there? Or how are you helping with cleaning and cooking and groceries and utilities?

You could contact a lawyer but I'd try a social worker first. I'm sure your Dr. can refer you to one.

Have you thought about hiding your cash where your brother can't get to it?

Assuming you're getting SSI funds, I believe that all federal funds now are being directly deposited to checking accounts. If you don't have one, open one so at least those funds aren't available to be stolen.

You could also get a debit or credit card and minimize the amount of cash you have on hand.

I do think though that legal advice might be helpful. Call your local government office (town, city, etc.) and ask if they have free legal counseling. Most communities in my area in Michigan have "ask a lawyer" day when questions can be addressed nominally for free.

There might be some other methods of protection against your family. However, you will have to stop lending money to your mother and/or brother. Only you can do that.
