I need respite care for my husband in 3 months and the assisted living facilities can't guaranteee a room until a couple weeks, possibly, before my departure date. I can't wait that close to my departure date and am even willing to pay the full amount up front to guarantee a room. If the facilities advertise respite, I would think a room or two should be set aside for that purpose. I tend to lose a great deal of money if I cancel, and I really NEED this time for myself after 10 years as his caregiver. Home care can't guarantee that aides would be available, as well, although I don't really want that. Any ideas?

Sorry to hear what you are going through. I hear your need for this time off. Are you able to talk to the manager or even go above the manager? I'm not sure why they wouldn't be able to guarantee a room for him. Are you able to use another facility? Maybe check with a social worker and see what other options are available? Any other family members or friends that would be willing to step in? Consider contacting Medicaid for options as well. I hope everything works out.

I worried about that when I had to leave the country for two weeks to attend a wedding, one thing I made sure of was that my trip cancellation insurance covered that.

I did write a letter to the CEO but never heard back. My husband stayed at this facility before which is close to my daughter. A bigger company took it over.. its a very good and reputable company so I was surprised. There are other places but all aren't just what would be best for his needs. I have long term care and the care agencies can't guarantee aides would be available until soon before my departure for home care.
I hope to go talk to a couple places next week - I just can't go when I want since I need a caregiver to stay.
My trip is to Europe and I do have insurance but I am going with a friend and I can't disappoint her either.
Thanks for your caring responses

It does sound awfully unprofessional to not be able to confirm availability for respite care. Certainly, they understand that family members are setting this time aside, perhaps, once a year for planned travel and that such plans are difficult to reschedule last minute, because their respite care has suddenly become unavailable. It defeats the purpose really. I suppose this may be a veiled attempt to encourage people to pay extra for the reservation and peace of mind. I'd ask them to EXPLAIN how they do this and why. As well as all your options.

I got an apologetic answer to my letter. They will get in touch with me to talk the end of August, but still can't guarantee a room for my early Oct trip. They offered two other of their homes, but neither are in my area, and still can't guarantee there would be a room! Apparently they don't understand what a bind this puts one in.
