My grandma has been In the hospital for two weeks, hopefully going to rehab very soon, she is weak and 86. She had a bad UTI, and a couple other things. She beginning to get depressed. She will eat when I am at the hospital, but refuses when I am not. She just tells the nurses I want to go home why won't you listen? this not eating when I am not there has only been a couple of days. Prior to the UTI that has never cleared for weeks she was very independent and no dementia. But the UTI has made her very weak, I hate that she is only eating one meal a day as I want her to get stronger. Any suggestions on what to do.

Cory, who is telling you that your Grandma isn't eating and that she wants to come home? The nurses or Grandma herself?

If it is Grandma saying those things, that's quite normal. Elder's find themselves a bit confused when in the hospital. My Dad thought he was staying at a hotel. They always want to go home where they are around familiar things and familiar faces.

It would be nice if Grandma would eat more than one meal, but then again she's in bed not doing physical activities so 3 meals a day might be too much for her. I know it was for me when I had a stay in the hospital.

Don't be surprised if Grandma does the same thing while in rehab, but that might change as she becomes more active.
