How do you deal with a mother in an assisted living facility who acts constantly that something is wrong with her and takes weekly trips to the hospital (the director at assisted living doesn't know what else to do) these episodes are so dramatic with screaming and moaning. The hospital usually sends her back home are just keeps her overnight for observation, one time insurance refused to pay. How do you handle her being at hospital and as an adult child not go. You never know what is real or just another drama scene. One of the last trips she made they told her her emzymes were up and now the trips are coming closer together, sometimes its nothing.

When was it last 'real'? If it is just a grab for attention, the best strategy for you (and the hospital) is to stop rewarding it with so much attention.

My mother had hypochondriac tendencies too. She would read the leaflet that came with her prescriptions and proceed to have every side effect listed. She also called 911 once because she couldn’t make it to the toilet in time. She was sent to the ER three times for nothing. But the facility had to send her.

Does the AL encourage your mom to join in their activities? She may be bored and looking for attention. N

Get her seen by a geriatric psychiatrist. She may needs meds for anxiety and worry.

I'm pretty surprised that the doctor at the AL isn't suggesting this.

Not all ALs have drs. The resident sees their own doctor.
