Within three weeks of entering a MC facility, my wife has contracted a UTI. This has made her very anxious and fearful of everyone and everything there. The head nurse called me today and suggested that maybe my wife wasn’t ready for a MC facility yet. She also suggested that, when this lockdown is over, I bring her there during the day but take her home at night (the time they have the most trouble with her).

We've noticed (via a camera in her room) that they aren’t showering her regularly and they also aren’t changing her Depends daily because she puts up such a fuss. What should I do?

Doctor review asap.

Antibiotics (if required) for UTI should improve things.

Changing/toileting/showering patients with challenging behaviours is just that - challenging. That's why you have chosen a MC unit with trained Aides. The facility should have a system of staff meetings to workshop strategies, implement then review progress as standard.

The Doctor may prescribe something for agitation as last resort after all behaviour strategies have been tried.

If it's a private-pay facility, they can discharge at-will. That's why your contract is probably a month -to month. As you say, you can move her if you'd like. Careful about the hidden camera; I'm not sure about the legal implications of that if you have not told them. It's easy to be a backseat driver when you're not providing the care directly. It's also more difficult to find placement in these times with the pandemic going on; your behaviors combined might leave you scrambling to find quality care for her. Please try to objectively think through the ramifications.

This is challenging. I would think they would know that people act crazy when they have a UTI. Once it's resolved, she should go back to "normal". And if her behavior is very hard for them to deal with, perhaps some meds to bring her behavior back into a more acceptable range needs to be considered.

Good luck.

If they aren't caring for her as you'd like, you should move her elsewhere. I can't fathom a MC place that can't handle the effects of a UTI.

People in diapers get UTIs -- a LOT. It comes with the territory, so if this place can't handle that most basic issue, then she'd be better off somewhere with a better-trained staff.

Thank you, all! Four answers with four somewhat different perspectives but all very, very helpful!
