Find Care & Housing
It will be very difficult although you could try to use a nun's hat with a commode. It won't allow you to get a clean catch sample, which is the main problem you'll run into. She'll have to be cath for this, most likely.

Brandee again

We kept a stack of "hats" and lab specimen cups (free from PCP)at the house.

Mom's PCP would not prescribe antibiotic without a urine sample.

1. Suspect UTI
2. Sat Mom on shower chair with "hat" in commode function. This could take awhile. Usually we wrapped Mom in a blanket as she got chilly.
3. Once we got a sample it was poured into the lab cup.
4. Sample driven to PCP and dropped off.
5. PCP called in appropriate antibiotic once urine tested.

One of Mom's CNA's suggested squeezing the urine out of Mom's depends.
We tried this. THIS DOES NOT WORK WITH DEPENDS.

We had Mom sit on the wheelchair shower chair with a "hat" underneath to catch the urine.

This is similar to what we used.
Amazon.com: Soaids 4-in-1 Shower Commode Chair with Wheels for Elderly & Disabled Adults, Padded Rolling Toilet Chair, Bedside Commode, Transport Wheelchair with Locking Caster for Bathroom, Home Care (Green) : Health & Household

There are some cheaper ones on the market.

The only time we used the commode function with the shower chair was when we had to get a urine sample.

Here is a "hat" style.

Amazon.com: Urine Hats for Toilet - Reinforced Ribbing Stool Sample Collection Kit - Standard Fit Urine Collection Hat for Toilet - Specimen Collector Urine with Durable Materials - 2 Pack : Industrial & Scientific

We picked up the lab cups from Mom's PCP office.

We also used the shower chair with the padded seat option in the middle of the bathroom for bathing Mom.

Obtaining a urine sample ( from the Alzheimer's Association)

If a urine sample is required, either to do a routine dip test or to be sent to the laboratory for testing, this should preferably be taken in the morning – the first time urine is passed that day.

If the person is incontinent and wears incontinence pads, a urine collection pack can be used to draw a sample of urine from the pad. These are usually made up of two urine collection pads, a 5ml syringe and a urine specimen container.

Contact your GP/PCP for advice on how to obtain these.

Im not trying to be insensitive, but if she is bed bound , how important is a urine test? Why put you and her through the difficulty of obtaining a sterile urine sample? Being catheterized just to get a urine sample is alot to put her through. Keep her safe and comfortable, and don't put anymore stress on yourself.

You will cleanse her thoroughly and position her on a new clean bedpan. This will be the best you can do. If doc says that isn't good enough she will have to go to the ER where they can straight cath her for a sterile specimen or a nurse or LVN can come to your home to do this in home. That will be discussion for you to have with the doctor ordering the test.

Is your wife on hospice? When my DH aunt was on hospice and a UTI was suspected, she was given a broad spectrum antibiotic w/o a urine test to treat the symptoms she exhibited...you might discuss this with her care team.

I asked Google if there were UTI testing kits that could be used with a wet diaper. You might try that for some ideas.

A particular website came up that you might want to read through to explore “smart”’ diapers.

You will need to have her catherized. Ask her doctor if he can request that Homecare come in and do it.

Would it be cheaper to pay for a medical transport to take her to her medical provider and they do it?

Same here but I spent about $900 on a PureWick urine collection system. The catheters alone were $300 for 30. I personally was a little disappointed in the overall performance as I still have to remove wet diapers. The unit is of faulty design to say the least. Feel like I wasted good money.
However to answer your question you may opt to get one and take the urine sample out of the collection canister.

Thanks for the reply Mister Thomas. We have the PureWick, however too many possible contaminants to get good sample. I understand there are services to do in-home foley catheter for a direct sterile sample. I haven't found one yet, but will likely be very expensive.
