If Mom is cognitive and wants your help, you can help her. Your not entitled to information on her finances or Medical unless she personally tells you. It really depends on how the POA is written to what responsibilities your step-brother has and if the POA has been invoked. If immediate, its invoked as soon as Mom signed it. If Springing, a doctor or doctors has to declair Mom incompetent to make informed decisions.

There must have been a reason she picked him instead of you.

If POA was conferred by your mother upon her step son then that is her choice. The choice of who to appoint as your POA is up to each individual him or herself. Children have no rights if the parent chooses another to act for him/her.

No, you don't have any "rights" in this situation. You can be helpful to your step brother regarding participating in your Mom's care, in ways he requests. Clear and respectful communication is key. But if this is about concern over her finances and how they're being managed (or not), the FPoA is under no obligation to reveal any of your Mom's info to anyone, blood relative or not. Have you ever seen the PoA document to know for sure that your step-brother is her PoA? Or did he just tell you this verbally? Pick your battles wisely... you are all supposed to be doing things for your Mom in her best interests. She picked your step-brother for some reason and you must live with the arrangement *she* chose.

Your mom has decided to appoint stepbrother. Being POA can sometimes be a difficult job. It takes lots of time, effort and learning how to do it.

Your mom has given you and your brother a pass. You don't have to do it, so be glad! I can't imagine why you'd want to get involved. Go on your merry way and let stepbrother handle everything. You have no legal obligation to do anything for mom. Blood in a case like this means nothing.

Unless your mom has been deemed incompetent, she has the right to appoint anyone she wishes to act as her POA.
