My mother is unable to empty her bladder after having a foley catheter following surgery. Has anyone heard of this?

Happened to my Mom too, she's 85. 5 months with a catheter, nothing has changed.
She has dementia, and tries to empty it herself (she is now in assisted living) and doesn't put the cap back on tight. So there is leakage into her shoe, which creates an odor. So I'm constantly having to figure out how to correct this, buying her shoes, spraying them. She would be mortified if she knew about the odor. :(

Her age is likely against her, but I would definitely try to find a geriatric urologist. It can't hurt - maybe something can be done for her. I hope so.

At 89, do you think the bladder can still be retrained? And yes, I think I will look into finding a geriatric urologist for her.

I have heard of difficulties, but generally the bladder gets retrained. I hope the doctor can figure this out. If she isn't seeing a specialist, she probably should.
