Hi everyone. My mother needs 24-hour care since she needs assistance with all ADLs, except eating. She is currently in a nursing home (after rehab.) We would like to bring her home but don't have LTC insurance. Any advice?

I would continue her in facility care. The care for home care is enormous, and quite honestly untouchable for almost everyone but the very wealthy. Most of the burden would fall upon the caregiver living at home. Do feel free to call various agencies in your area, discuss the care needed, and check on the efficacy of such a move. Some states supply much more care under medicaid than others. So once the elder's own assets are spent down, and medicaid is in place, living in Michigan, as an example would be better than many other states. Feel free to explore, but meanwhile let Mom stay where she can get the 24 hour assistance she requires.

Was she living alone before rehab? Why are you thinking of bringing her home? Your home or her home?

24 hour care is wicked expensive. I think you might be better off with her in a nursing home. If you don't like the place, maybe you can find a better facility. Your mom may not like it anywhere but home but when a patient's needs are high, sometimes a facility is the right answer.

It may be wise just to leave her in the SNF. For Medicaid, she has to be within a certain income threshold. Then you may only get a few hours a day. Otherwise, its trying to find reliable home care aides. Agency costs are high and paying privately means being an employer with all that goes with that.
