I haven't been able to speak with my mother for the last 5 days. Her building made her a welfare check yesterday and said she is ok. She has a mobile phone but obviously something happened to it that she can't call and I can't call her. Is there any type of service in NJ that is free or covered by medicaid that would provide assistance in setting up her phone, computer and install a landline? She was in the hospital for a few months and she lost all this. The guy that came to install internet and cable didn't know how to set up her desktop computer. I am in Europe so I can't help her. She has a home aide that comes during the week but spends weekends alone. She is wheelchair bound.

Medicaid does not, as far as I know, handle this type of thing. The cable companies give special pricing to those who are on Medicaid assistance. My nephew pays $10 a month for his internet. Not sure if there are special discounts thru providers for low income concerning installation of a landline or setting up a computer. If she had a landline before there should still be a jack. Its just plugging the phone in and getting service.

I agree, she needs to call her County Office of Aging for help.

P.S. I live in the Northeast and Xfinity/Comcast and Verizon are our two cable companies that do internet, phone and TV.

I believe you would need to arrange this with Optimum or Spectrum - they are service providers. If she can get Spectrum service (depending on if they provide service in her area), they are usually very quick in arranging service and they can set up a landline and internet connections. I believe her cell phone needs to be taken care of at the provider's store location...perhaps your mom's aide can take care of that?

I've remotely arranged this for my elderly aunt - and whenever there's been an issue, a technician has come out to rectify the problem. You can google their customer service phone number (Spectrum or Optimum) and arrange a time for them to set this up.
I hope this helps!
