Thank you for your response. I was quite shocked when a relative of our recently passed away and his daughter could not afford a funeral ! I had no idea what funerals cost.
As I understand it my mother's Medicaid cannot be affected because I am the beneficary.

Marci,
I commend you for thinking ahead. Since Medicaid does not cover funeral expenses and Social Security provides a grand total of $250 for this purpose your mother's funeral may leave you and your family with a bill of over $6000 at the worst possible time. But regarding the Life Insurance--tread carefully. There are many scams out there. Deal with known companies like those recommended by AARP or Consumer Reports. Depending on your mother's age and current state of health such insurance may cost more than it will cover. If this is the case confer with a trusted Funeral Director in your area. They may have reasonable pre-pay plans that will suit your needs. Above all, try to remain objective. This is a very emotional and difficult subject to discuss at any time. But you will have peace of mind once you know this is settled and you can devout more emotional energy to taking care of mom and appreciating her while she is still with you.
