We are being told Medicare will not pay for what they have done if we move her. She has demintia and is scared there and we are not happy with the care. They say she needs more rehab but can’t even tell us what kind of rehab they are doing.
My father went to rehab after he broke a hip and was scheduled to stay for 20 days; he wasn't making progress, however, so Medicare was not going to continue paying for his stay. The rehab wanted him to segue into the long term care section of the facility, but I said no. I wanted he and my mom to go into an Assisted Living community together, of my choice, which has/had nothing to do with Medicare.
Your question isn't making sense to me..........? Medicare will pay for your MILs stay in rehab as long as she was making progress during that stay. If the rehab facility wants her to stay in their long term care section, like they did my dad, you do NOT have to oblige them! It's up to YOU where your MIL goes next, and if that's an ALF, then so be it. They are probably trying to scare you into agreeing to allow her to stay where she is, which is nonsense. If you have any questions, call Medicare directly and ask THEM. Don't trust what the rehab has to say about anything.......they're just looking for a new resident (most likely).
If her dementia is preventing her from being able to progress with the therapy, then, why can't they coordinate a move to a more appropriate facility? I'd make sure the AL is appropriate. Does she need MC or nursing home care, due to a medical condition?
Medicare will pay for the time she was there. This isca scare tactic. But, ALs do not do therapy. You can ask her PCP to order therapy at the AL.
You parent is not a prisoner. The doctor can discharge her Against Medical Advice. But make sure she is discharged. If refused, call your State Ombudsman. She is being discharged to a safe place.
