sdixon1, I also have low vision. I found replacing the "soft light" light bulbs with "day light" bulbs made a world of difference. I still have landline phones in every room so I make sure the lights are bright enough for me to read the Caller ID. Some landline phones you can adjust the font to make it larger.

I no longer use a cellphone because I need my magnifying glass in order to read the Caller ID, and forget about texting. Plus I found that landline phones have much better hearing clarity then any cellphone as landlines don't pick up all the background noise.

The phone is free but not the service, right? You have to have a landline?

I have an old landline phone that came with a cordless phone with a charging base. I have friends and family entered in the phone so when they call the phone says their name. If not a friend or family I don't pick up. My cell phone has the same feature. I have a Samsung galaxy. You just go into the phone settings to "Answering and ending calls" then click on "read caller names aloud".

Your County should have Disabilities Dept. Call them and see if they can help. She may be able to get a phone free.

Do discuss with the physician now managing your mother's site. Whatever the causes are, if there is no cure, then there is much to be learned about all SORTS of assistive devices to help those who are dealing with low vision or with impending legal blindness issue. And you will need to access a lot more than the phone.

Next go to the internet search engines and type in "Assistance to those with poor vision" and learn of all the assistive devises as well as apps and governmental help available to those with poor vision. This is a time when the internet is definitely your friend for access to everything including SS benefits.

Good luck.
