I don't know how to help my mother with her diarrhea she has been like this for awhile. She has been in and out of the hospital for the past five years and always gets better but last time she was in something happened. I was away in another state when she was admitted its been almost a month and since then she is not getting back on track. She has lost so much weight, I am afraid the way her health is declining so fast. Any suggestion please, I do need to stop the diarrhea and make her stronger, she is 89.

My husband had advanced Parkinson’s. He had the symptoms you describe and lost 20 lbs in 2 months. I took him to a doctor and blood pressure went done to 60. We were sent to the hospital and admitted right away for a colonoscopy. It turned out that he had lymphocytic colitis-that can only be confirmed by a sample retrieved from a colonoscopy and viewed under a microscope. After given the correct medication, he recovered. He had no history of this previously.

After ruling out C-Diff you could try adding probiotics to her diet (or use a supplement capsule) and some psyllium fiber. You might also want to add something like ensure or boost to her diet to increase calories.

Where does she live?

Is she on meds known to cause this? Increase foods know to help, decrease foods know to increase it.

Might try an elimination diet because maybe she is allergic or intolerant of something. Been checked for IBS?

Sounds horrible. I hope she is at least in a facility because this sounds impossible to deal with at home.

She is currently living at home with me in Atlanta GA, and she is on so many meds because of her condition, blood pressure, blood thinners, potassium, water pill etc

Has she been on any antibiotics over this time? She could have C-Difficile which gives explosive diarrhea that cannot be controlled and can actually be deadly. She needs to have stool checked for this.
