Coloring books and crayons have been lifesavers for many years now. However, we recently saw her eating crayons, so we are having to take coloring away from her. She is extremely active and we are trying to find out what activities can we purchase for her to do that would be safe and not something she can eat? She walks without a cane, and has had no falls. Her bones are stronger than ours and while she definitely has Dementia, she is quick-witted and has the last word on everything. Whenever we put our hat and coat on, she is ready to go, morning, noon, or night. We don't have enough for her to do? Help, please.

I like the idea of adult day care.
But there are things she can do at home. Even if she doesn't do it well, she can fold face cloths and hand towels; match socks, sort coins and playing cards (no you don't need to use them, just keep putting them out for her to sort). She can accompany you on walks; attend local music programs at libraries or schools (just be ready to leave early if it is too much for her).
She can sing along to music cds; dress dolls, sort coins. Think about what she liked to do before she became ill. Good luck

I think you should consider adult daycare or in-home agency help to keep her busy and retain everyone else's sanity. Her behaviors will be changing and changing as her cognitive condition worsens, so maybe start thinking about placement in Memory Care for her (I think she's beyond AL if she's eating crayons and she's not physically sick so not LTC). I realize this is a huge change in thinking about her care but it will make no sense to have 4 people orbiting around her every day. I wish you wisdom and peace in your hearts as you ponder this situation.

If you have not informed your doctor about her behavior, I would do so on Monday. With 5 people in the house, it sounds like she would do better somewhere like assisted living.
