I am going to have to move her to a nursing care that will convert to Medicaid when her money runs out. My mother has 13K in credit card debt ..can the credit card debt be discharged? We have been paying about $300.00/mo and if she is accepted in a new retirement home they will take all her assets.
What will happen to the debt? Thank you for your help...things are moving so fast...I am at a loss. I am trying to reserve her remaining money that she needs for self care. I am retired and can not contribute to paying down her debt. I do pay for her phone & cable and little things..about 150.00/mo
.I feel so helpless.

Talk with assisted living and see what resources they have to guide you through this. I contacted them when my father still had funds for close to 2 years. They moved him to a cheaper apartment. I applied for VA benefits. Talk to the office on aging ad see what options you have.

Unless there’s another person on your mother’s credit card account, no one can collect the money when she’s broke. My mother went from self pay, long term care insurance (a huge waste as it ran out in less than a year) to Medicaid all in the same NH. The business manager of the NH walked us through the Medicaid application process, we didn’t pay anything for the help. It was seamless and went better than we would have predicted. Don’t worry over your mom's debt if your name isn’t attached to it. Her SS will go directly to the nursing home. And a side note, my mother’s care was never a bit different going from self pay to Medicaid. I think a lot of people fear poor care because of Medicaid, and we never experienced it. Wish you the best walking through this
