Tammypykiet, sad part is that our elders will fall no matter where they are living. Plus if your Mom is wearing bi-focals, she is looking down through the reading section thus everything will be blurry at floor level.
My Mom had a serious fall at her house that resulted in head trauma, and that resulted in Mom spending her months in long-term-care. She, too, was in last stages of dementia which was triggered by the head trauma. The facility tried to keep Mom in a wheelchair but she would tumble out whenever she thought there was something on the floor.
The facility tried using a seat-belt but within seconds they heard "click" and Mom had the seat-belt unlatched.
Then the facility tried the Geri-recliner, Mom would try to get out of that.... pillow under her knees did help as it would take Mom quite some time to pull that pillow out.
My Mom's brain was scattered, the brain was telling Mom she could walk but in reality she no longer could. Trying to keep her in bed at night was another issue.... [sigh].
I have wondered about this too. My step-father who in a wheel chair has fallen 4 times in the last month, he is in AL, fortunately he has not broken anything. I am not sure what can be done, his legs are gone, now I think his arms can no longer lift him. I will follow this post.
She should be in a wheelchair and monitored. I am surprised this has not been suggested. There are alarms that can be put on wheelchairs to make staff aware that a resident is trying to get up.. Mom had a geri chair where the seat slanted towards the back and made it hard to get out of the chair.
They have not mentioned that😳 The nursing home does not specialize in Alzheimer’s but does have a handful there. May be time to move her.She does not sit well so it’s tough! I sure appreciate your advice I will be asking the home about this! So sad to see her keep getting hurt today she fell on her face Had to get stitches on her nose and cut her upper underneath lip. She has tripped 3 times over those other residents wheelchairs.
