She expresses fear, loneliness, sadness even though I had been going 5 days out of 7. The director of the facility has now instructed us that we are making it worse by being there too many days and too many hrs per day. My Mom moved there after 9 months of losing my Father to Covid and me living in their house with her. She started in assisted living downstairs and was never adjusted and she fell and broke her arm near her shoulder. She spent a month hospitalized where she had to be treated for hospital psychosis and came back to having to move into the memory care unit. She could not adjust and was admitted into a behavioral hospital for seniors to try to adjust her medication to allow her to remain in memory at her current facility. Since then she was put in a wheelchair but kept getting up to walk to ease chronic pain in her lower back and side due to scoliosis and degenerative bone disease in her back.

Can anyone give me info on dementia patients suffering from depression and anxiety and if any medication helped?

Hi OP, I hope your mother will be OK! I hope you’re all right. From what I understand, it’s better not to give psychiatric drugs to people with dementia. They risk falling even more. The drugs relax the muscles too much; they’ll try to get up and fall. And you risk (with the drugs), that your mother will be zombie-like. Sometimes the dosage is continuously increased.

You said your mother is depressed and anxious. But she has good reasons for that. I don’t think one should silence someone expressing how unhappy they are.

At the same time, I understand you want her to be happier. I really hope you find a way.

Difficult people are over-drugged sometimes, to make it easier for the staff. Please avoid this for your mother.
