The nightmares are called night terrors. My Mom used to scream bloody murder but she didn't have the more than 2x a week. Her neurologist said if more frequent he would put her on a medication for it.
According to your profile, your mother suffers from Alzheimer's/dementia, which usually reaches a point where in-home care becomes too much for one person to manage. Since she lives with your brother, I assume her care has become too much for him to bear, and that's why he's beside himself. Or, perhaps your brother is beside himself BECAUSE he has to place her? Managed care is not the Little Shop of Horrors many people seem to think it is, but an answer for a demented elder AND their family who's at wits end trying to juggle their life, her life, and all the care details that go along with dementia. The REAL horror is the dementia itself, as I witnessed today when I went to visit my mother who is on a downward decline these days at almost 95.
What does her primary/specialist say about the nightmares? Does she have a bedside commode? I had to remove the trashcan from my dad's room and the bedside commode. I don't even have a trashcan in the living room anymore so that he doesn't get any ideas. I help him to the bathroom several times during the day and thankfully, as of this week, he sleeps through the night now. So once I'm up and have taken myself, I'm off to get him.
One of the drugs my granny was put on to help with the decline caused horrible nightmares.
I always recommend ruling out changes caused by something new being added before making any big decisions.
It may be getting to the stage that she now needs a village.
